Got your ears pierced recently? That’s always an exciting moment! At Paddie Hair & More, we understand how special it feels whether it’s your very first piercing or you’re just adding to your collection.
As a unisex salon in Mumbai offering professional ear piercing services, we’ve seen it all from happy smiles to nervous first-timers. And one thing we always tell our clients: proper aftercare makes all the difference. That’s why our team at Paddie decided to put together this super simple, super helpful ear piercing aftercare guide.
First Things First: What Happens After the Piercing?
Once your ear is pierced, it’s officially an open wound. We know, it sounds scary, but it’s normal! Your skin needs time (usually 6–8 weeks) to heal properly, and how you treat it during this time can either speed up recovery or slow things down (ouch).
That’s where the dos and don’ts come in.
What to Do After Getting Your Ears Pierced
1. Clean It Twice a Day, No Skipping!
Use a sterile saline solution or the aftercare spray recommended by your piercer (we use a safe, skin-friendly solution here at Paddie). Clean around the piercing front and back with a clean cotton pad. Do this once in the morning and once before bed.
Paddie Tip: Avoid using your hands directly. Cotton buds or sterile gauze are your new best friends.
2. Wash your hands before touching.
We can’t understate the importance of keeping your hands clean! Your hands carry bacteria, and handling your piercing without washing them is an invitation to infection.
3. Keep the earring in (even while sleeping)
Your earring must remain in place during the healing process; otherwise, your piercing may close before you can say, “Where’s my bling?”
Choose hypoallergenic starting studs, such as those we use at Paddie, which are gentle on sensitive skin and allow your ear to breathe.
4. Sleep Smart
Try sleeping on your back or the side opposite to your new piercing. Pressure and friction can irritate your fresh piercing, delay healing, and even cause pain.
Paddie Pro Move: Use a travel pillow (yes, the neck one!) with your ear in the hole, zero pressure, maximum comfort.
5. Stick to Simple Hairstyles (Just for a Bit!)
If you have long hair or layers, try pinning it back for the first week or two. Hair strands can tug or get tangled in the earring, no thanks!
6. Stay Consistent with Aftercare
Even if your piercing looks fine after a week or two, keep up your aftercare routine for at least 6–8 weeks. Healing happens under the skin, too!
7. Come Back to Paddie for a Quick Check-In
Not sure if your piercing’s healing right? Swing by Paddie Hair & More, we’ll take a peek, give you peace of mind, and even clean it for you if needed!
What Not to Do After a Piercing
1. Don’t Remove or Change the Earring Too Soon
We know, we know… you’re dying to wear those cute new hoops. But patience, dear friend! Changing earrings too early can cause irritation, infection, or even a closed-up hole.
2. Don’t Touch It All the Time
We get it new piercings are fun to admire, but avoid poking, twisting, or rotating it unless specifically told to do so by your piercer: over-handling = angry lobes.
3. Don’t Use Alcohol, Peroxide, or Ointments
These might seem like good cleansers, but they’re way too harsh and can dry out your skin, delay healing, or even cause chemical burns.
Stick to saline or Paddie-approved aftercare sprays only. Your ears will thank you.
4. Don’t Sleep on Dirty Pillowcases
Freshly pierced ears + dirty pillowcases = disaster. Change your pillowcases every few days while your piercing heals. You’ll feel fancy and keep bacteria at bay!
5. Don’t Ignore Signs of Trouble
Some redness and swelling? Normal. But if you notice:
Yellow/green discharge
Persistent throbbing pain
Heat or excessive swelling
A bad smell
… it’s time to see us or visit your doctor. Don’t panic, just don’t ignore it either!
